This bibliography lists introductory sources on most personalities and aspects of Alaska history and literature. Unlike many other bibliographies, it contains not only a listing of books, but also articles and government publications. It contains annotations as well, where the original compiler (Melvin B. Ricks) and the editors have felt they would be useful.

An amateur historian and bibliographer, Melvin B. Ricks retired to Alaska where he worked for the Cook Inlet Historical Society. After more than a quarter century of collecting historical materials related to Alaska, he commenced preparing a bibliography of Alaska materials but died before it could be completed. This bibliography was edited and completed by Dr. Stephen Haycox of the University of Alaska, Anchorage.
